The George Mason University Police Department hosted its Tenth Annual College and University Police and Investigators Conference (CUPIC) during the first week of August, at the Sheraton Tysons Hotel in Tysons Corner, Virginia. CUPIC focuses on unique aspects of law enforcement and security needs for colleges and universities; it further provides a perfect forum for law enforcement and security personnel to come together and participate in topics and breakout sessions that deal specifically with college and university level crime and public safety related issues.
CL360’s Joseph Piccoli, Louis Rapoli, and Brian Reilly were on hand to deliver a special training session, entitled “Tactical Emergency Casualty Care on Campus” to campus police personnel. The training was an adaptation of CL360’s 1-Day Point of Wounding (POW) Care training – with special emphasis on mass casualty incidents in educational settings.
This was Joe Piccoli’s maiden voyage as lead instructor; his insight as an Air Force Pararescueman was invaluable, as he explained the crossover implications from military (combat) medicine to civilian settings.
This session also placed special emphasis on casualty movement (lifts, carries and drags) and evacuation; students found the practical exercises in this area very beneficial.
CL360 also had an exhibitor’s table at the conference, where we displayed our two trauma kits — the POW Kit and the Command Action Bag. Also displayed was some of the trauma simulation equipment we use during our training; we know that seeing is believing. The hyper-realistic equipment adds a lot of training value to our instruction.
